Angst - a film about Anxiety

Disruption to school, afterschool activities and sports as well as the cancellation of birthday parties, graduations and the celebration of other milestones, all combined with ongoing uncertainty around the pandemic, has had a devastating impact on our youth. Rates of anxiety and depression are higher than ever.
Girls on the Run Capital Area and Central PA is hosting this FREE event for families to learn the signs and symptoms, how to start a conversation around anxiety and where to access resources if needed.

Thursday, Jan. 28 at 6 p.m./3 p.m. PT for a virtual screening and panel discussion

Angst is a film-based education program designed to raise awareness around anxiety, with an emphasis on youth and families. The film includes interviews with kids, teens, experts, and parents. Our goal is to help people identify and understand the symptoms of anxiety and encourage them to reach out for help. We will be showing the film, which will promptly be followed by a panel discussion and include access to further resources and materials.

Ready Set Music! SEL and Music

Earlier this week, WITF and CAIU launched a new website and resource entitled Ready Set Music.  This set of one-minute music videos and accompanying materials is designed to help students negotiate feelings and change through song. There are four different songs but 10 videos.  Three of the songs have been sung in multiple genres to introduce students to different musical styles.

While geared to PreK to grade 3, they could be adapted to any age group.

Description from the website:

Feelings can be hard for children to talk about. Often they demonstrate their feelings before they can use words to share them. As adults, we can often be proactive when we are crabby or tired or frustrated and change our behavior. Most children are still learning to navigate that. Helping children use words to describe what is happening inside them is an important part of Social and Emotional Learning. These words and messages can be taught and reinforced through music. Geared towards PreK-3

grief

Children's Grief Awareness Day is designed to help us all become more aware of the needs of grieving children — and of the benefits they obtain through the support of others. Children's Grief Awareness Day is an opportunity to make sure that grieving children receive the support they need.

Oct. 28 - Nov. 11 - Fall Conferences

I know that conferences are coming up soon!  I am happy to join in on your conference with a classroom teacher, but I am also available if you would like to speak with me individually. This is a great opportunity for you to share with me any concerns you might have about your student's social-emotional well being, or ask questions about resources.

Just send me an email to let me know a good day and time within the Fall Conference window and I will send you the Zoom meeting link.

Meet the School Counselor

Here is a brief video here about what my role as a school counselor will look like this year.
