alright hello good morning good afternoon good evening whenever you are watching this my name is Mrs. Mandia and I am the school counselor at Broad Street Elementary School you see there a picture of what it will eventually look like if you've driven past it anytime lately it does not look that right now but we're working progress goals for this year I'm at the school counselor my job is to keep the help them manage their anxiety make them laugh when I can make them feel loved and teach them something so those are my main goals every year but especially this year I'm were entering school on with heightened levels of anxiety and maybe feeling a little uncomfortable going back so I'm going to be there to support your students and support you in whatever way that I can so what it could look like this year there are a lot of possibilities so definitely incorporating a lot more technology with regards to video chat and zooming being available that way for students I'm definitely incorporating calm down strategies and teaching strategies to help when students are feeling anxious uncomfortable or even just getting back into the swing of things with school it's been awhile since students have had to be students in a in a building so helping them with that is definitely on my on my list of things to do virtual learning in person learning we're gonna do a hybrid model to start out the year and my lessons will be offered it'll look a little different than it typically does typically I was in the classroom at least twice a month but now that we have to get the Core Curriculum then I'm going to more of an asynchronous model where I'll have the lessons available with a video and have some SeeSaw activities so that's what we're thinking but we're pivoting we're being flexible on and my main goals I'm going to accomplish those work towards those it just might look different than it typically does I like I said supporting students and families on to stay healthy helpful and calm is my ultimate goal and it might look different per family but you letting me know what you need is how we can be the most successful so if you need resources or your student on is having some struggles or some challenges let me know so I can help you and support you in those different ways getting ready for the first day like I said been awhile since students have been in the classroom and had to be Learners in the classroom so this might be tricky for some students I recommend starting with consistent and predictable routine that means you're having a bedtime and getting up out of regular time this will help your student get back into that groove of going back to school and being a learner in a school building talk with your student ask them you know what are you thinking like what's going on and role-play with them maybe some of those situations that they're feeling a little nervous about you know how to raise your hand and ask a question or asking for a mask break when you need it that's something no we haven't really had to do before so there's going to be some new strategies of ways for your student advocate for themselves and for what they need and the more you help them with that in the more you normalize things I think that will set them up success maybe try talking to him about your first day of school and maybe some of the feelings that you had when you were going back to school I know the beginning of the year is typically a heightened anxiety time and this year more so than ever before if you are dropping them off try to make it pretty quick so that it's not prolonged and then you know looking forward to that conversation when they get back try to stay positive and ask them about the positives of their day and some things that went well maybe some new friends that they made and just know that it's going to be typical that you know adjustment is needed you know it's not going to be a snap of the fingers and we're back into the groove of things it's been several months I like I said since students have been in buildings so have grace with your students have grace with yourself and realize that it's going to take some time to get into a groove and in for things to kind of feel like they're they're going normally or more smoothly along the way definitely ask for help ask for support whatever way you need we're very lucky to live in a district that has a lot of resources available on whether that's financial or even we have school counselors school social workers school psychologists lots of people that are ready to help in whatever way that we can again asking your student about their day is a great way to develop that relationship with them and also help them build that positive outlook for school keep working on the routines if you need help with that just just let us know and just know that challenges mistakes are going to happen we're human we teach growth mindset especially in the Mechanicsburg School District that's something that we teach with our staff and with our students that it's okay to make mistakes and that's actually showing that we're learning and we're trying new things because we're not going to be great at things as soon as we try them so keep working at it keep trying and ask for help when you need it we're going to be leaning on each other a lot during these first couple weeks first couple months maybe the whole year so it takes a village I definitely believe that and let us be a part of your village and and help support you in whatever way that we can I have my contact we will be updating websites and keeping in contact with newsletters and SeeSaw definitely using a lot of SeeSaw this year again feel free to contact me about anything if you need support questions
